New Traffic Shift Coming Thursday Night for Eastbound Route 22 Traffic over I-83 near Colonial Park in Dauphin County
-- A temporary traffic signal will also provide access to northbound I-83 from eastbound Route 22. --
Harrisburg, PA – During the overnight hours on Thursday night, June 28, the two lanes of eastbound traffic on Route 22 will be shifted onto the new bridge over Interstate 83 in the I-83 Exit 50 interchange near Colonial Park in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County. They will join westbound motorists who were moved onto the new bridge on June 17. With all of Route 22 traffic on the new bridge, the contractor can proceed to demolish the old bridge and complete construction of the remaining portion of the new bridge structure over I-83.
In addition to the traffic shift on Thursday night, a temporary traffic signal will be activated on Route 22 on the east side of the new bridge. The temporary traffic signal will provide access for eastbound motorists on Route 22 headed to northbound I-83. This is a new turning movement for this interchange. In the old interchange, access to northbound I-83 from eastbound Route 22 was by way of a loop ramp on the right. In the new configuration, access to northbound I-83 will be from a turning lane on the left at the traffic signal. (See attachment.)
After the Fourth of July holiday, the contractor will demolish the remaining portion of the old bridge and build the last section of the new bridge. Turning movements that are currently prohibited in the interchange – such as the left turn from westbound Route 22 to southbound I-83 and the left turn from southbound I-83 to eastbound Route 22 – should be restored by late summer. When the last section of the new bridge has been completed, traffic will be placed in its proper alignment, When the project is finished, there will be permanent traffic signals on both sides of the bridge, controlling the movement of traffic between Route 22 and the ramps with I-83.
This work at the I-83 Exit 50 interchange is part of an overall construction contract that began in 2016 to replace three bridges that cross over I-83 in Lower Paxton Township – Elmerton Avenue (State Route 3026), Route 22 (Jonestown Road) and Union Deposit Road (SR 3020). The Elmerton Avenue bridge was rebuilt in 2016. Construction of the Union Deposit Road bridge at I-83 Exit 48 wrapped up last fall. The Route 22 bridge at the I-83 Exit 50 interchange should be substantially complete by the end of this year. All three new bridges will provide greater lateral under clearance to provide the width necessary to widen I-83 to six lanes. The I-83 widening project is currently scheduled to start late this year and finish in 2021.
PennDOT has contracted with New Enterprise Stone & Lime Company, Inc. of New Enterprise, Pennsylvania, to conduct the three bridge replacements at a cost of $34,199,999. The overall project with the three bridges is scheduled to wrap up in spring 2019.
